The Loverdos Museum

The Loverdos Museum- a branch of the Byzantine and Christian Museum of Athens- opened its gates to the public in May 2021. It is housed in the Ziller-Loverdos Mansion which was built during 1882-1885 by the German architect Ernst Ziller and was his residence. It hosts the collection of Dionysios Loverdos who was the next resident of the building. The collection, one of the most important and large collections of post-Byzantine religious art in Greece, includes icons of the Cretan and Ionian School, woodcarvings, manuscripts and miniature objects as well as works of art by 20th century artists like Kontoglou and Pelekasis who were inspired by the post Byzantine painting.
