Byzantine and Christian Museum

Originally founded in 1914, the Byzantine and Christian Museum has been housed since 1930 in Villa Ilissia, a complex built in 1848 by the architect Stamatios Kleanthes to serve as the residence of Sophie de Marbois-Lebrun, Duchess of Placentia (Duchesse de Plaisance). It is one of the most important museums in the world, dedicated to the art and culture of the Byzantine and Post-Byzantine period. Organized in collections, the museum’s over 25.000 artifacts cover an extensive period from the 3rd until the 20th century AD.
